The United Nations recognizes August 19 as World Humanitarian Day to commemorate those who gave their lives helping others during the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. World Humanitarian Day calls for global solidarity with the more than 130 million people around the world who need humanitarian assistance during devastating tragedies. The UN headquarters in New York will host a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the day and will also host a high-level event at the General Assembly.
